I heard some of his band members used to to try to sneak hits off a joint or do shots while FZ wasn't looking...like teenagers trying to raid their parents' liquor cabinets before they got home...don't know if any of that is actually true or not, but FZ WAS notoriously anti-substance, especially as you note, among his own band members.

he was positively James Brown-like in demanding perfection from them, and yep, it was NOT easy given his conplicated orchestral arrangements. For sure, one of the biggest differences between FZ and the Dead (Jerry and the boys not exactly known for their polished performances!)

They played Southern Illinois University when I saw them on the Tinseltown Rebellion tour. A friend of mine ran into Ray White and Ike Willis at a party after the show. They both took a few hits off a joint, saying, "Don't be tellin' Frank about this. He'll shit!"
